Is ecotourism a sustainable practice?
Starting Point. Discuss the questions below.
Many confuse between the terms “Ecotourism”, “Sustainable Tourism”, and “Responsible Travel”, so here’s a simple explanation on the differences:
Ecotourism is a niche segment of tourism in natural areas.
Sustainable Tourism does not refer to a specific type of tourism, it is an aspiration for the impacts of all forms of tourism. All forms of tourism should be sustainable. The GSTC Criteria serve as the global standards for sustainability in travel and tourism.
Responsible Travel is a term referring to the behaviour and style of individual travellers.
Do you agree or disagree with the following statements?
1. Ecotourism only hurts the environment
2. Ecotourism helps to save the environment
3. Ecotourism is not a way to protect the environment; it is a way for large companies to gain more profits
4. Ecotourism scars environments that should be protected
5. Ecotourism helps to provide an economic boost to regions that are normally not tourist destinations

Ecotourism was a concept developed in the 70’s and 80’s as a way to use tourism to encourage conservation and promote the well-being of local communities. Though ecotourism is intended to be a more environmentally friendly alternative, in practice it’s not as straightforward. Studies show that in some cases, ecotourism efforts can flop. These failures are often the result of areas that attract too many tourists, and in some cases based on a lack of “charismatic” animal species. In this episode of Mongabay Explains, we look at what makes an ecotourism project a success, and when that can turn into a failure.
